Watts
ジョージ・フレデリック・ワッツ（George Frederic Watts)
1817~1904年。イギリスの画家で象徴主義運動に関与した。代表作に『希望』（Hope, 1885）、『ミノタウロス』（The Minotaur, 1885）などがある。後年は彫刻にも手を染めた。
ヴァーノン・リーとワッツは面識があり、1883年にワッツ邸を訪れている。そのときのことを母親宛の書簡の中で次のように述べている。"He (Watts) is, as you know, one of the chief of the Idealists, yet separated by a gulf of fashionableness from the pre-Raphaelites. He has really done some first rate work, but now is old. He is a most charming old man." (Gunn, PP.87~88.)
エッセイ集Genius Lociには、"Mr. Watts magnificent sketch"という記述がある。ワッツはリー好みの画家であったようだ。
同じく美術エッセイ集The Beautifulでは"as I remember the late Mr. G. F. Watts showing me, every curve which we look at is felt as being part of an imaginary circle into which it could be prolonged"と書いている。
