George Frederic Watts
George Frederic Watts

1817~1904. A British painter. He was committed to the movement of symbolisme. The major works of his are Hope (1885)、The Minotaur (1885) and others. In his later days, he engaged in sculpturing.
In 1883, Vernon Lee visited Watts'. She wrote the impression of Watts she had at that time in a letter to her mother: "He (Watts) is, as you know, one of the chief of the Idealists, yet separated by a gulf of fashionableness from the pre-Raphaelites. He has really done some first rate work, but now is old. He is a most charming old man." (Gunn, PP.87~88.)
In Genius Loci, Lee wrote: "Mr. Watts magnificent sketch." Lee seemed to like Watts' works. They knew each other.
In The Beautiful, she wrote: "as I remember the late Mr. G. F. Watts showing me, every curve which we look at is felt as being part of an imaginary circle into which it could be prolonged."
