フランスはヴァーノン・リー生誕の地。ヴァーノン・リーは1856年、フランス北東部ブローニュ（Boulogne）から12マイルほどの距離にあるシャトー・サン・レオナール(Chateau St.Leonard)で生まれた。ただし、すぐにパジェット一家はドイツに移住している。
リーが自身の生誕の地としてフランスにどれほどの愛着を抱いていたかは定かではない。フランスの文化に対する言及も、イタリアやドイツのそれほどには多くない。しかし、リーの伝記を書いているピーター・ガンは"the countryside of France appealed to her strongly and she remembered gratefully that there was French blood in her veins and that she had been born in France"と記している。(Peter Gunn, Vernon Lee. P.168.)
リーは10歳の時、初めて南部の町、ニース（Nice）を訪れて以来、何度か冬をニースで過ごしている。
若い頃パリを訪れた際、リーは自分の才能を認識し、早く本を出版しなくてはならないと感じた、と伝記作者Vineta Colbyは指摘している。一方、近代化が急速に進むパリに対し、リーは複雑な感情を抱いていた。美術研究家だったリーはルーブル美術館にもたびたび訪れていて、手紙の中などでそのことに言及している。リーはルーブルを様々な友人と会う場所として使っていたようだ。
旅行記Genius Lociではフランス東部の地トゥーレーヌの印象を"In Touraine Ⅰ"と "In Touraine Ⅱ"にまとめている。トゥーレーヌの特徴を、リーは"prosaic sweetness"と呼んでいる。また、同書の'Bayeux and the Tapestry'ではフランス西部ノルマンディー地方の都市バイユーを訪れ、そこの博物館にあったタペストリーを見たときのことを語っている。さらに、"France, Again"ではフランスを再び訪れた際の感動を記し、ディエップ、カレー、ブローニュらの名前に言及している。("France again! I have that feeling whenever I get off the boat, even after an absence of only a couple of months. I believe I should have it after an absence of a couple of days." p.100)
旅行記Enchanted Woodsでは、パリについて次のように書いている。"O Paris of the Left Bank, the only real Paris for me, with thy stately hotels and long convent walls over-topped with discreet green; they frowzy little Balzac pensions, tenanted once by the nymphs of the Farmers―General, and now by enthusiastic art students and warlike doctoresses, and widows from the provinces leading bowing sons in checkered cravats; Paris of Faison d'Ors where we hoped in the plat du jour and hesitated between gratuitous blue wine and another, not gratuitous, demi-cannette; Paris of the cremeries, wherein we cheated desire for afternoon tea and, many, doubtless, thought to cheat desire for dinner or lunch; Paris of history, or romance, Dumas and Balzac, of hope and effort and day-dreams also, Socialists, and scientific struggling young girls of Rosny's novels, and ardent expatriated creatures fit for Henry James!"
