ファリネッリ
ファリネッリ(Farinelli)
1705～1782年。イタリアのカウンターテナー歌手。本名カルロ・ブロスキ（Carlo Broschi）。最も有名なカストラート（変声期前に去勢した男性歌手）で、イタリアはもちろん、ヨーロッパ各地、特にスペインの宮廷で活躍した。その美声に失神する女性もいたというほどの人気を誇った。台本作家のメタスタージオらと組んで活動した。メタスタージオをファリネッリのことを'adorable Twin-Brother'と呼んでいた。
ヴァーノン・リーは友人の画家サージェントとともにボローニャの音楽学校を訪れ、そこでファリネッリの肖像画を目にし、強い印象を受けている。
ヴァ―ノン・リーの短編 'Winthrop's Adventure'と「悪魔の歌声」は明らかにファリネッリをモデルにしたカストラートが登場するゴースト・ストーリーである。1873年、リーは友人のサージェントとともにボローニャでファリネッリの肖像画を目にし、彼にまつわる話を聞き、魅了された。
レズビアンであったヴァ―ノン・リーは中性的な存在であるカストラートに関心を抱いたようだ。なお、カストラートは人道的な観点から非難されるようになり、現在では存在しない。
'Winthrop's Adventure'を収録した短編集For Mauriceの序文でヴァーノン・リーは次のように述べている。"this famous singer Farinelli (Carlo Broschi nicknamed Farinelli or rather Farinello, born in 1705, died 1782) who, after dispelling with his songs the melancholia of one dotty King of Spain, Philip Ⅴ, became as indispensable to the somewhat feeble-minded Ferdinand Ⅵ, and was all powerful with both for some twenty years in the capacity of virtuoso di camera, and with virtue no less rare and consummate than virtuosity."
