スタンダール
スタンダール(Stendhal)
1783～1842年。フランスの小説家。本名メアリ＝アンリ・ベール（Marie=Henri Beyle）。フランス・ロマン派を代表する作家。自由主義者で軍人となり、ナポレオン時代、王政復古時代を生きた。代表作に『恋愛論』(De l'amour, 1822)、『赤と黒』（Le Rouge et le Noir, 1830）、『パルムの僧院』(La Chartreuse de Parme,1839)など。
ヴァーノン・リーはスタンダールの小説を愛読していた。ピーター・ガンはリーが愛した作家としてスタンダールとトルストイをあげている。同じく伝記作家Vineta Colbyもリーがスタンダールを愛読していたことや、作中でスタンダールについて述べていることについて言及している。The Handling of Wordsでは、リーはトルストイと並んでスタンダールを最も称賛している。彼女は次のように書いている。"But meanwhile I am finishing that most enchanting of books (except the Chartreuse), Rouge et Noir, Stendhal!)
Gospels of Anarchyの中では、"the school of sympathizing, personal, in a way unprofessional novelists whose greatest representative is Tolstoi,....followed closely by Stendhal, Thackeray, and our golden but clay-footed idol, Meredith." と記している。(Colby, Vernon Lee, P.277.)
そのほか、兄ユージーン宛ての手紙の中でスタンダールのLa Chartreuse de Parmeに言及している。("...it seems to me that the author of the Chartreuse de Parmehas written a history of painting and a life of Mozart and of Metastasio, all of which have left me the sad impression of this writer's common sense and learning."
